The STREAMS (Supplementary Training to Reinforce Education of Academically-Gifted but Marginalized Students) is one of the educational development programs of Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan under the Office of the Student Affairs. This program aims to help public senior high school students enhance their knowledge on academic subjects for higher chances of passing college entrance examinations, and acquiring scholarship grants and aids. This also serves as an avenue for volunteers to live out the Atenean value of “men and women for others.”

Since 2004, STREAMS has been giving opportunities to poor but deserving students all over Misamis Oriental, Cagayan de Oro city, El Salvador, and Bukidnon. After a thorough screening of all the student applicants, only 50 are accepted in the enrichment classes and self-enhancement sessions.

Every Saturday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, STREAMS Academy’s skilled volunteer tutors teach the participants Mathematics, English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Computer.  They also give techniques and methods in answering difficult test questions. Aside from academic sessions, there are also three (3) self-enhancement sessions which help the participants improve their self-concept and self-esteem through activities and workshops. In order fulfil the main goal of the STREAMS, which is to sustain the college education of the participants through scholarships; the volunteers also assist participants in getting scholarships from sponsors and different sectors  in and out of XU.

For the record, STREAMS had changed the lives of over 500 students, even reaching out the most isolated public schools in Northern Mindanao.  It continues to make college dreams come true for the marginalized but academically gifted students, and shapes Ateneans into better persons for others. This is the program which offers pathways to higher education—the STREAMS.
